🎪 Techno and hard festivals in France this October

October is no end of season. Five festivals share the month and four of them are openly hard: the back-to-school calm has given way to big indoor formats, and Halloween piles on top.

23:59 Weekender, 10 and 11 October

The 23:59 Weekender takes over the private beach at Parc de Miribel, just outside Lyon, for two days of hard techno and twenty-three artists. AREA ØNE, GRAVEDGR, OMAKS, EARGASM GOD and Blasha & Allatt lead, with 2HOT2PLAY, DBBD, PRADA2000 and Russian Village Boys further down the bill. Strictly 18+. The Lyon crew shows up twice more in this guide, which says a lot about who runs the city this month.

Open Rave at the Halle de la Machine, 10 October

Organïk teams up with Machines Vivantes for the takeover night of the Mécanik Paradize festival (8 to 11 October): an open rave inside the Halle de la Machine, home of Toulouse's giant mechanical creatures, with the machines performing mid-party. Rebekah, Clara Cuvé, Azyr, BLK, DYEN and Popof play from 3:30pm. From €39.90, with an optional afterparty at Le Bikini if you want to see the night out.

Encore x 23:59 at the Halle Tony Garnier, 24 October

Lyon's two busiest hard techno crews co-produce in the main hall of the Halle Tony Garnier from 10pm. Vieze Asbak, Natte Visstick, SLVL and USH on top, then Zapravka, Toxic Machinery, Eczodia, Marie Vaunt, Lola Cerise and Riana Holley. The first three tiers have sold out; the last one is €49. Toxic Machinery and Eczodia go again the following week at Villepinte.

Dream Nation, 30 and 31 October

Dream Nation returns to the Parc des Expositions in Villepinte, north of Paris, for two days of hard dance with a bass wing alongside. On the hard side: Angerfist, Korsakoff, Da Tweekaz, Hysta, Alignment, Kruelty and Novah. On the other, Pendulum, Netsky, Flux Pavilion and The Bloody Beetroots. It's the biggest bill of the month and the widest too, with hardstyle, hardcore, drum and bass and psytrance under one roof. €40 to €80.

Walking Bass Festival, 30 and 31 October

In Marseille, Walking Bass calls this edition "The Last Raver", post-apocalyptic set design included. Friday is the Clash Collectif Face 2 Face night at the Salle des Sucres (La Plateforme); the big two-stage show lands on Saturday 31 at Parc Chanot, 6pm to 5am. Vladimir Cauchemar, Lil Texas, Medusa, Gonzi and Vortek's b2b Omaks. Friday from €27, Saturday from €52, two-day pass from €72.

The rest of the month happens in clubs and warehouses, from Detroit electro to Belgian hardcore.

🎧 Club nights and raves: the rest of the month

DJ Stingray 313 at Nouveau Casino, 2 October

The Detroit DJ opens the month in Paris with Jean Nipon and Aleqs Notal. High-speed electro in the Drexciya lineage, and a night apart in a guide that mostly hits hard elsewhere.

Verknipt France at Kodz, 3 October

The Dutch hard techno institution puts on its first night in France at Kodz, the warehouse club in Englos on the edge of Lille. BLNK and LIEKS come over from the Netherlands, LS41 from Germany, TiTi from China, and uphoria holds the French corner. Five names, one room, 10pm to 6am, 18+.

Endless Hardcore Summer 4, 10 October

Explity Music buries the summer for the fourth time at La Station Gare des Mines, with Belgian crew Stimular as guests. WØRTAAL, Lolalita, Brennt, Talita Otović live, Claude Murder, DimberlalK, Karlfroye and Nouminouw, from 11:59pm to 7am. €13 to €16: the cheapest ticket in this guide.

Jeff Mills at the Saline Royale, 11 October

The most unusual date of the month is out in the Doubs: Jeff Mills at the Saline Royale in Arc-et-Senans, a former royal saltworks on the UNESCO World Heritage list. One name on the bill, and that's enough. From €37, on the Sunday, right after an already busy Saturday.

Ones and Zeros: Boys Noize at Mia Mao, 16 October

The Ones and Zeros takeover puts Boys Noize on top at Mia Mao, midnight to 7am, with Adame DJ from Brazil, TINKERHELL from Argentina and MarcelDune from the UK. Three price tiers from €15 to €28, 18+.

tribalism: Stanislav Tolkachev live at essaim, 23 October

The Ukrainian producer comes with a live set, not a DJ set, to essaim on rue Philippe de Girard, 11pm to 6:30am. Raw, stripped-back techno, with Montero and Nectare around him. The €20 presale gets you priority entry until 1am; most tickets are sold on the door, so get there early if you haven't bought one.

KLOFAMA all night long at Kodz, 31 October

For Halloween, 23:59 hands Kodz to KLOFAMA for six hours solo, 11pm to 6am. The Dutch artist is known for signature kicks and melodic breaks, somewhere between hard techno and hard industrial. Same club as Verknipt four weeks earlier: Kodz is settling in as the hard address of northern France.
