The venues

Sala Sonora, in an industrial estate on the riverside (metro Astrabudua), is THE reference : Time Out sums it up as 'like taking the Bilbao metro and ending up in Bristol'. A reference sound system, Friday and Saturday, underground techno and house, Europe's best DJs.

Fever, over in Indautxu, plays the bigger format across 3 floors including one techno, a more mixed crowd. Sala Azkena, ~200 capacity, holds the local alternative underground, tied to the Basque scene. Let's be honest : Bilbao's club scene is more modest than Madrid's or Barcelona's, and Sonora carries it almost single-handed.

The festivals

Bilbao BBK Live turns 20 from 9 to 11 July 2026 on Mount Kobetamendi, above the city. A multi-genre festival, but the electronic side is serious : Charlotte de Witte, Richie Hawtin (DEX EFX X0X), Soulwax, DJ Koze, Donato Dozzy and 2manydjs on the bill, plus the Basoa stage dropping techno sets deep in the forest overlooking Bilbao.

In autumn, BIME Live returns to the Bilbao Exhibition Centre from 27 to 30 October (multi-genre, lineup still to come). Beyond these two peaks, the night plays out mostly in clubs.

The least Spanish city

Bilbao is the Spanish city that looks least like Spain : Atlantic, rainy, post-industrial, with a Basque identity (euskara, cultural autonomy) that makes for a scene apart. The 1997 Guggenheim transformation turned the city into a model of urban regeneration, and that energy fed a strong indie and alternative scene long before techno arrived.

BBK Live IS Bilbao : the festival is literally up the mountain above the city, between forest and urban panorama, in the rain as much as the sun, without the Mediterranean certainty. That relationship to nature and to weather that can turn at any moment gives the Basque party a rawer character, closer to Glastonbury than to Fabrik. Bilbao dates surface in the list opposite week after week.
